armoire

May 6th, 2008

Trash picking is my hobby. Granted, it’s not a very glamorous one and not really all that interesting, but I love it.  And the trash gods (garbage men?) have been good to me lately.  This is the biggest and probably the best thing I’ve ever found on the curb.  It took much help from many friends to actually get it to my house, but I would have lugged it home on my back if that’s what it took.   It has three shelves, but only one at the moment because my kids think it’s their clubhouse.  The drawers actually work and there are two sets of hinges on each door so they can open all the way (270 degrees).  It’s on our porch now and I hope to fill it up with art supplies for rainy days.  But it will be perfect as an extra closet one day.

I know there are other out there like me who sift through trash when no one is looking. Who can blame you–people throw away good shit.  I started a flickr group: trash pickins.  Because you want to brag about what you found, but don’t want to get that look from people when you tell them where you got it.

Posted in my home.

    WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!!!

What a find!! I can’t understand how people can just throw stuff away like that! I mean, don’t they know anyone they can pass it on to? But lucky for you, you found it before it ended up gracing the dump! Looks gorgeous!

We found a great cupboard/chest once, and we were using the van at the time we found it and it would not have fit. I told my husband that he would have to leave me there and get the truck, because I was NOT leaving it! Someone stopped and asked if we needed help and he was nice enough to load it in his truck and drop if off at our house! Thanks good samaritan! I cleaned it up and found a date of 1865 on the bottom of the drawer! To this day, it has been our best find!

That is a great score! My dad is a dustbin man (as we call them over here in the UK) and the stuff he used to bring home for us – wow! We got brand new bikes, clothes, books, toys and once my mum even got a ring that has been valued at £2,000. The stuff that people throw away is unbelievable!

    HOLY SMOKES!!!!

    That is stunning!

I admit, I do it too. Tucson is great for it. It can be hard though….. if you see something, you have to snatch it up fast because there is always someone on the prowl ready to pounce:)

I have a really small car. I know people have passed me and cracked up at the things that I try to fit in the little thing. Little bungee cords work wonders.

  8. Man is that awesome! Reminds me of Soule Mama’s armoire in their dining room. I just wasted an hour looking for a pic of it for you, but you know what I mean, right? Nice work.

That’s quite a find! I find the best stuff abandoned on the curb. once I convinced a gas station attendant to lend me a hand truck so that I could get a dresser home!

Wow! You must live in a ‘nice’ area. I love trash days too but haven’t found anything that gorgeous. Tell me – do you wait until you think they thrower-outers are not home. My problem is that I get a tad embarrassed.

  14. AJ says:

Absolutely gorgeous. No trash pickin’ around here. People really just throw out garbage. I go to the antique stores and find my kinda garbage. Not on the curb but close enough. :)

I am always scanning the foot paths for furniture and the like. I have not found any thing recently but always on the look out. Given you can obviously sew, you will have no probs sewing childrens clothes!

Wow! Lucky you! InS weden most apartment buildings have a big-trash-room – where you put your old furninture and stuff like that, and then the garbage-men picks it up. I always rummage through ours. Found a lot of treasure there :-)

  17. Jill says:

Great find!!! Like you I’m a treasure hunter. It’s the thrill of the hunt. People really do just throw away some really great stuff. I’ll have to check out the flickr group in my spare time.
