We’re still working little by little on the kids’ room. The paint is on and the crib is up! Three kids in a room! Ooff! Here is the before post if you forgot what it looked like (because it was so long ago) and a during. That big board up on the wall isn’t minimalist art, though with my moody, out of focus shot it does look like it. I’m going to paint a map of our neighborhood on it and I would love your thoughts. I’ve got an overhead projector that I can use to trace a map, but I’m stuck on colors. We live by some lakes and parks, so there will be shades of green and blue. But what about the streets? I was thinking white, but is that too much white in the room? Or I could do the blocks white and leave the streets the color of the board. I still don’t know what to do about marking the places–kid drawings? Polaroids? stickers? Remember I was a philosophy major not an art major. I need your help!
Under the crib I’ve got it covered. A few casters and wheels on some old boxes and blazzam! Storage! There is finally a place to put puzzles and linens. The wheels look cool, but I’m holding my breath with two boys in the house. Isn’t that bear creek crate bomb? I was at the expensive thrift store (ha!) and it was only $1.50. Score!
I think I might make a bumper out of that black and white ikea bunting fabric. The baby isn’t so much a baby anymore, so the bumper won’t be to protect his little head. It will block his view of the other kids so he can actually fall asleep. Well, that is the theory anyway…

I love those old boxes, I have a couple of ancient Schweppes boxes that I love, but have just been taking up space on my shelves. Under-bed storage is such a great idea!
Also, that neighborhood map is the best idea ever.
LOVE the boxes and the storage idea! You could always paint the streets with chalkboard paint and they could draw in the vehicles. Not sure if it’s low enough though for them to get to….
yes! those boxes are the perfect size for puzzles…that’s exactly what we use them for in our house! the map will look great i am sure! don’t worry about too much white in the room… think about all the color that toys,etc will bring into the room…

I love the under-bed storage boxes! I can tell you from personal experience the boxes are great but you never know what might show up in them. We have 3 boys in our house… ages 12 to 17. I would love to tell you their ability to keep things tidy gets better but I’m afraid such is not the case in our house. IN fact in honor of the beginning of summer we are doing a clothing purge. “school” clothes (to include shoes and off season sports gear) in totes on the top shelves of the closets…
I like the idea of leaving the roads the same color as your board. NOw here is some food for thought… what are the personalities of your children? Would they like the real life renditions of neighborhood stops? Or do they like to be involved in the process? I learned the hard way that sometimes they really do care… (at least with a couple of my boys… the 3rd can be swayed.)

I like the idea of leaving the roads the color of the board and the Polaroids. The boxes under the crib are great!
We draped a quilt over the side so that my littlest couldn’t see us leave the room… but it doesn’t help if your knees ‘pop’ as you stand up!
What if you made the roads a light grey with yellow striping? Love the crate with wheels-although my baby would probably be pushing that around the house like he does with everything else-dining room chairs, for example! Love your blog, been reading for awhile but new to commenting.

Dana, nooooooo! the baby may almost be 2, but he still fits in a crib :)
What wonderful light the window brings into the room.
As for your map idea you could paint it with chalkboard add your map lines with permanet paint. Then your little ones can personalise it with chalk and perhaps later on you can take it off the wall and use it has a car playboard etc.

I absolutely adore that cot and while I like to design children’s rooms I’m a terrible painter…so no advice for the neighbourhood print – but the idea is fabulous! Can’t wait to see the end result x
