flock top
July 13th, 2011
There was a brief period after KCWC where I was riding a sewing high. Many things got cut out a few things got half done and then it fizzled. This top didn’t help with the fizzling. I just kept screwing it up at every turn.
The fabric was supposed to be this orange linen with sort of hand drawn white flowers. Pretty, right? The problem was flowers don’t grow sideways. Damn. It took me a while to pick another fabric I like, because I’m trying to find a place where my kids and I can both be excited about the clothes I make. I don’t want hyper stylish kids dressed in all gray, but I don’t want them to have free range picking out the fabric. Does that make me a mean mom? whatever. I’m the one sewing it. Also, I get to make the rules, so there.
I picked up this fabric at a swap (thanks Lil!) and though there wasn’t as much as the pattern called for it worked out okay. It hangs a little weird in the front, but I’m probably the only one who notices. The pattern is awesome by the way. It’s a free tutorial called the apron top tutorial. The yoke is so simple and pretty. I bet it would look great with stripes. It was originally a halter top, but my daughter can’t stand them so I went with a criss cross deal. Jump! Jump!
Love the yoke too, I’ll have to check out that tutorial. I didn’t notice the front drape until you pointed it out and I’m sure it’s even less noticeable in real life. It looks like the arm scythe needs to be extended at the sides a bit to make the front piece a bit wider?
Wow. You just referenced Kris Kross. And I had to look it up to see how it was spelled.
Wow. Well done.
I know exactly what you mean…I often have a hard time finding a compromise between what I want to sew and what my kids want to wear. The top came out very cute.
I know the feeling of sewing peaks and valleys and this top is a definite peak for you – well done!
I also try to find the balance between kiddy and sophisticated. I tend to go for neutral colours with pops of pattern, mostly Japanese prints who tend to be less pink and girly.
Thanks for sharing the shirt and the tutorial.
This dress is really sweet! and great for the summer. the fabrics combine beautifully and the shape of the yoke is perfect. Really great work!
Well, it turned out really nicely in the end! I do love that seagull fabric and am clicking on the link for the tutorial right now! Thanks
That is so cute and your model seems to really like it!
I have been enjoy your newsletter/posts.
Super cute and summery! I feel you on the KCWC crash and burn, I’m just now sitting back down at the sewing machine. I feel you on the fabric compromises, my son is obsessed with elephants, but that does not mean I want to make a bunch of dorky elephant pants. Nor do I want to spend a bunch of time/money tracking down non-dorky elephant fabric. Good thing I’m still bigger than him – making the rules, rules!
I’m with you – letting the kids choose their own fabric isn’t always a good idea! But that’s a great top.
This is so, so beautiful! And I think it is great as not to be so extremely “hip” and gray- it has a sweet touch that perfectly fits cute child-wear. Love it!
