friendship bracelets

August 9th, 2011

I’m still here! We just returned from a little trip to grandma’s and now I’m nursing an awful cold. The children seem to take these horrible head colds in stride. I, on the other hand, look like I just got hit by a bus.

I made these two bracelets for a good friend’s birthday last week. Yes, I am a woman in my 30s making friendship bracelets for a woman in her 30s. And yes, my husband laughed at me. But whatever. Learning how to make them again made me a little teary about my camp days. Also they are, I believe, stylish–as ridiculous as that may be.

I went with the chevron style and the boring old stripey style. I tried for a more grown up color pallet, but really they are going to look like friendship bracelets no matter what colors you pick.

Sorry about your cold. I have one too…my second one of the summer! Pretty bracelets, I think I might have to make one for old times sake!

I am so excited about this trend and have been making them like crazy. But… I have yet to wear one out of the house, nor have my friends for whom I’ve made them.
I did see a hipster at a mexican restaurant wearing some the other day. I guess I’d better wear them before they are out again for another 25 years. Mostly it’s about the making, though, isn’t it?

My daughter has been making these like crazy the last couple of weeks. I’m wearing 2 that she made me, and I’m working on one for her. :)

One of my students made me and my boys bracelets and we’re all wearing them and love them! Great for you!

Hey it was just a chuckle, I think you are creative and wonderful.

I think I’ll just find the ones I saved … as soon as I go to make one they’ll be out of style again.

Oh I never made them the first time around (I know, WTF?) and now I’m making them like crazy. The kids are thrilled. They are great for the car trips in which I am not the driver. I think I need to make myself an awesome bracelet and wear the sh!t out of it.

I’m with ya on the friendship bracelet parade. I made more than a few over the summer. I needed some refreshing but three rows in and it was like riding a bike. I felt a tiny bit silly until I saw a young college guy wearing one at In ‘n Out Burger. That was all the confirmation that I needed, Yes, they really are cool.

I adore them! Last year Things We Make hosted a friendship bracelet swap – so fun. And I still wear mine. Now you’ve got me thinking about whipping up some more.

My niece was given friendship bracelet supplies last Christmas and I was teaching her to make them – I totally got into it again!

Seriously, *no one* is too old for a friendship bracelet! I love the way they looked stacked with some of these http://honestlywtf.com/diy/diy-wrap-bracelet/ (see last photo.)

  12. Oh wow, a trip down memory lane! I had no idea they were stylish. Well, it will probably hit *here* next year. I still think they’re lovely….the wider the better.

I´m in my 40´s and definately going to make and wear friendshipbracelet! I´ve always wanted, and now i´m going to. And oh, all my friends ofcourse, more or less in their 40 are going to get one too. Or two.

I liked how you described having the flu. Me too, hit by a bus.

I used to do so many of these bracelets when I was a kid. We pass a lot of summer afternoons with my girl friends doing colourful bracelets!

Flashback! I have been thinking about these lately, especially since I saw some Japanese craft books on friendship bracelets. Isn’t that funny? Then again, they also have books on making Hawaiian leis too.

I’m sure their models somehow make wearing leis looks deep. And I’m guessing their bracelets are infinitely cooler than mine.

Yikes…that first photo takes me back!

  17. Oh, you just made my heart ping a little. How many hours did I spend making those things, pins through jeans and all? Love.

  18. Suzanne says:

How fun…I want one! Wait, I think I still have one in my jewelry box….

  19. Anna says:

oh my goodness, this makes me so nostalgic. i used to spend hours and hours making these. i love the idea of picking up an old hobby again. i’m sure my box of embroidery floss is still sitting around my parent’s house somewhere…

I never did these until in my 20’s…20 years ago. But I was very good and had requests from adults for my fancy designs. I’m relearning with my 5 year old right now, or rather, I’m making and she’s picking colors. I LOVE the shot with the safety pin on your jeans!
