fire and ice birthday party
February 26th, 2013
February birthdays can be kind of a bummer. I know because I have one–and so does my son. So I try to throw parties for him that make people with summer birthdays jealous. There will be no awesome tail gate sledding party for you, Gemini. Ha ha!
This year, my son wanted a winter picnic party on the ice (take that, Cancers). Also requested were, marshmallows, glow sticks, a cake shaped like a 6, and popcorn. All birthday wishes granted! I wasn’t too sure how the cake would turn out, but it seems there is nothing more frosting can’t solve.
I stumbled on these glow swords at Target, and wow! were they a big hit! I had planned to have some sort of balloon game with glowing balloons (a la pinterest), but you need 1. clear balloons (not just white ones), 2. super bright glow sticks (not the skinny, cheapy ones from target), and 3. actual pitch black, not 7pm. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.
The kids didn’t seem to mind.
Before the epic glow battle, we built a big fire and roasted marshmallows. By the way, roasted marshmallows in your hot chocolate is the best thing ever, which is also how my son described his party. I have to agree–nothing better than turning 6 with a giant fire on a frozen lake!
That looks like the most phenomenal 6th birthday party ever. Love it!
this is brilliant! my son’s birthday was last week and we will definitely have to try something like this one year! LOVE the glow sticks idea.
dude i wish i had a february birthday now! what a super cool party. gotta be in wisconsin though, we’ve got exactly ZERO frozen lakes in portland. february is mostly dreary around here (though my daffodils are nearly blooming…so……).
There is officially ZERO green here.
Wow! I would have loved this as a kid. Great proof that outdoor parties don’t have to be in the summer.
Great ! Both my kids have January birthdays, AND we are in Wisconsin, I’ll think of that next year ! It sure beats having to entertain kids inside the house…
Best. Mom. Ever.
Best. Comment. Ever.
So freakin rad! A party like makes less Virgo jealous for sure!
My son and I both have February birthdays too, but we’ll have to wait til we live in a better climate before we can have as fabulous a party as your son had. Here in Ireland it’s wind, rain and wind. How I envy your fire…
kites maybe? or puddles stomping? If there is fun in below-zero weather, there must be fun to had in wintery ireland!
That looks like a humdinger of a birthday! I’ve never roasted marshmallows in the winter (though I have had them in hot chocolate…) but I really want to try it now. :-)
I actually roasted some on the stove the other night (on a chopstick). A little bit of a fire hazard, but so delicious in hot chocolate!
You are so awesome! This is an amazing birthday party. Amazing! Also, you are making me miss that lake. Such a good lake.
So winter in the midwest DOES have a bright side (pun intended!). What a great way to celebrate and embrace your seasons. Happy birthday to the birthday boy!
Coolest party ever!!
Well now that is some really cool stuff. I need to up my birthday awesomeness for my kids this year it would seem.
As a Southern hemisphere Gemini I completely understand. I would give anything to have a pool party. We don’t even have anything as cool as a frozen lake. I just settle for bon fires.
A few years ago, we were in Hawaii for my birthday and I finally experienced what a summer birthday was like. I highly recommend it!
wow those swords and ice make them look like jedi’s on planet hoth. ok that was me waving my geek flag…. very cool party
Awesome! We have two November birthdays in our house and they can be pretty blahh in regards to the great out doors so this certainly strikes a cord. What a good mom you are!
That looks AWESOME. My daughter has a January birthday, but we can’t quite count on snow here in Virginia for her birthday. Unless of course, we plan a scavenger hunt outside (like we did last year). The kids didn’t mind though.
Some years we do a half birthday party so she can experience a summer ‘birthday’. This year we did a slumber party. No, my house is not nearly big enough for the number of girls we had, but they had a great time. And we had wine.
Oh, I love that last photo so much. It seems to sum up completely the warmth (despite being atop a frozen lake!) and fun of the evening. +Chelsea
