kcw winter 2014: day one

It is day one of Kid’s Clothes Week! Because I was at Alt Design Summit for most of last week, I am going in cold. Very cold. Today I spent my hour staring at fabric. I used to think standing there staring at fabric was a waste of time, but I’ve discovered it’s an important part of the process. If I skip this step I’m never quite satisfied with the end product.

If I let myself stare and don’t stop myself, wonderful things happen.  A lot of the times I  get my own way and screw things up either because of self doubt or comparing myself to others. Today I trusted my judgement and chose whatever fabric jumped out at me. And look what jumped: Pink!? I’ve never been a pink girl, but my daughter has been choosing it more often these days. Looking at this pile, a salmon-y pink paired with orange is actually kind of awesome. Throw in some gold polka dots and it’s time to get this KCW party started.

I have made two pieces of clothes for my daughter already. I woke up at 4 in the morning California time, and now since an hour ago I can’t seem to get into my wordpress account!!!!! I’m ready to post something and have everything ready and this is frustrating!!! I see you have a lot of knits in your pile, I in a knit thing this days too. I can’t wait to see what everybody else makes! Good luck!!!

  4. I know what you mean with staring! I hate it when I get tired with the project while making it and that is what happens, if I haven’t thaught it thoroughly.
And I love pictures of nice fabric piles and I love seeing other people putting colours together!

I’ve down quite a bit of staring, thinking, and rethinking but finally got around to some sewing last night. It feels nice to get started and I’m excited to see your creations and those of everyone else!

Pink, salmon and gold polka dots. I like that girl’s style! It sounds like something you would want to dance in.

This is a totally essential first step. I’m excited to see how you incorporate the gold. I’ve been loving gold and pink/coral together – I can’t believe that I just wrote that, but it’s true. At least for the littles. Go Meg!
