kcwc: day five
September 24th, 2010
I cut out this skirt for kcwc in the spring, but then the pockets and the piping started to looking very difficult and it found it’s way to the bottom of the pile. Well, it turns out the piping wasn’t hard at all–a little fiddly maybe, but it turned out.
The pockets on the other hand are now in the garbage. You can’t see the back pockets the pattern picture, but they are cute little curved things with piping around the bottom, and a horizontal buttonhole on the top hem, oh and they are top stitched too. I have no idea how you are supposed to make buttonholes look good on knit fabric or top stitching for that matter. Whatever, maybe I’ll have to courage to try again in the spring.
Or if my daughter demands it, because she’s pretty peeved that the pockets in the front are fake. And really I was kind of annoyed too, when I figured out what the diagrams were telling me to do. This is another pattern from Everyday Bottoms; it seems like I’m having a japanese kids clothes week, but the patterns are so damn stylish I can’t not make them.

Today’s giveaway is a new book, called Sew Tina!, by fabric and pattern designer Tina Givens. The book doesn’t even hit the shelves until October, so this is a super special sneak peek! It is filled ideas and patterns for children’s clothes, accessories and things for their rooms. I haven’t seen the book yet, but if that cute little dress is any indication, it is sure to be fantastic.
To enter this giveaway tell us if you are a work from patterns or dive right in without a plan kinda sewer, or if you have read some extra good craft books lately or what you had for breakfast. Good Luck!

The winner is
#114: Carolyn!
Congratulations!

When I just want to get something done, I use a pattern but I’ve been trying more and more to use tutorials or design something myself. If you can judge a book by it’s cover, this one looks great. Thanks for the chance!
I absolutely need patterns. I cook with recipes too. I wish I was one of those people who can “wing” it. I had toast and coffee for breakfast. How about you? (And how cute does that book look?).
This book looks cute! Since I’m not very good at following directions I usually begin with a pattern and then head out on my own. I do this in cooking too. The only problem is it’s hard to duplicate something I’ve made that I really like!
I had Kashi G o Lean cereal…and I sew from patterns…I have enough patterns from my Mom and my own pile to keep going for years and years and years….
Oh, I sooo want to be brave enough to be a “wing it” kinda gal when it comes to sewing, but I usually have to stick to patterns. I’m the same with cooking & recipes. Gotta trust myself more, I guess!
I’m in my first year of sewing consistently, although I learned how years and years ago. So… I am definitely still using patterns or tutorials.
I went kinda crazy on buying sewing and crafting books this last year and have a BUNCH of good ones. My latest favorite is Alicia Paulson’s (of Posie Gets Cozy fame) Embroidery Companion. LOVE IT!
I generally sew from patterns or tutorials and tweak as I see fit. I’m trying to do more self-drafting though.
i do both…though i like patterns better!
I always have to have a pattern though I’ve recently learned how to make my own patterns and that’s been very liberating.
I find patterns to be intimidating at times, so often avoid them, but later regret it. It’s a ridiculous situation! The Tina Givens book looks very exciting!
Some of the best things I’ve made have been from tutorials or by just winging it. I also use Simplicity patterns for basics like pants or skirts and Oliver + S when I”m looking for something special.
We had German pancakes for breakfast. I find for clothing I do better with a pattern, with home dec stuff or purses or bags I just need the measurements and a test run and I find that I can make most things like that with out a pattern per se.
I am a pattern girl! I have 3 little girls and when I get a chance to sew I just need to whip something up. I would love to make my own when things calm down a little!
I usually go by patterns, but sometimes I will take ideas from different patterns and adapt them to make the project I have in mind. I am in love with Oliver + S patterns, as well as Anna Maria Horner’s “Handmade Beginnings” book. I had a bowl of Oh’s cereal with skim milk for breakfast this morning and a cup of Irish Breakfast Tea with milk. :)
I’m definitely a “plan” sort of sewer, be that a tutorial, pattern, or at least a drawing of my own idea! I hadn’t heard about this book. Looks cute! And it’s even called “Sew Tina”, like it’s telling me to go sew. Serendipitous.
I am definitely a patterns girl. I once tried making my own pattern, it was a total flop. Maybe someday I’ll get better…*sigh*
That dress is absolutely adorable!
I use patterns, but I liberally change them to make what I want to make.
Love the skirt you made.
Muffins and coffee. :-)
It depends on my mood. If I’m feeling exact I go for a pattern. If I just want to create I dive right in.
The skirt is adorable. My oldest daughter would love it!
I was taught to sew by a only-make-by-pattern-and-follow-it-exactly mother, so this is my default. However, I am delving into the relm of no-pattern-dom and I am loving it!
I had cereal for breakfast, not exciting.
I tend to use patterns, but I do seem to prefer the sorts that involve recipes or tutorials that allow me to draft things to the correct measurements myself. This book looks really cute, and I do have kids to sew for, so I’d love to have it.
I aaalways use a pattern. As a newbie to sewing I still don’t feel enough confident to sew without them. I’d love to have that book!
Little form column A, and a little from column B, depending on my mood. Usually for special occasion stuff i use a pattern, but for every day stuff i make it up as i go along.
I am not one for follow instructions of any sort! It took me 4 attempts to pass my driving test, so you can see the type of person I am! I dive straight in cut and sew and work it out as I go… most of the time, things need re-doing but that’s how I learn, by my mistakes. I would love a book tho! I need all the help I can get! Lou X
Oh, I work from patterns! Always! :-)
I like to use patterns whenever possible, but I also like to take an item already made and change it up. And for breakfast, I had eggs :)
