kcwc: day one

September 20th, 2010

The kids clothes week challenge is here! Gather up your supplies and your ambious list of things to sew and carve out an hour to work on it today. Then hop over to the flickr group and show us what you’re making. Be sure to check back here because as a special treat I have lined up a giveaway for everyday this week! Lots of them have to do with sewing children’s clothes, but some are just cute and I wish I could win, but I’ll let you have all the fun.

I have to confess did my sewing last week so I could have some things done to show you this week. There are some smarty pants out there who did all their cutting out ahead of time, so the flickr group is already starting to fill up with cute handmade clothes. This little number is the dress version of the Tee for Two pattern from Patterns by Figgy. It’s an amazing pattern for a simple raglan sleeve shirt in knit fabric, done on a plain old sewing machine, with all the seams on the outside and the hems left stylishly (and effortlessly) raw.

This means the shirt will be comfortable, itch free and definitely worn. It also means that you have to sew with WRONG sides together, which is very clearly stated in the directions, but it turns out there is some automatic mechanism in my brain that will not let me sew with wrong sides facing because I had to unpick the same seam three times before I got it right. It’s not like I was tired and not paying attention either: I had coffee in my system, it was mid-morning, quiet even, but my brain kept flipping the fabric behind my back.

If you think you can sew the seams on the outside without your brain short circuting, then you should leave a comment to win this very pattern. That’s right Shelley from Patterns by Figgy has generously donated the Tee for Two pattern for the first giveaway.  The shirt can be long sleeved or short sleeved, or even a dress with a little gathering at the front and flutter sleeves–super customizable and for boys and girls sizes 12mo.-6/7. So leave a comment with some ridicuous sewing desaster you’ve had, or your grand plans for the week, or the weather report, or just say hi. I will use the random number picker thing tomorrow and post an update on this post with the winner.

THE GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED!

The winner is #62, Rebecca from The Prepared Family. Congratulations Rebecca!

I used random.org and if I knew how to show you the little picture of the number picker I would, but I promise it said 62.

  1. Sitting down to start a half hour of sewing right now! After my skirt tutorial prints (from Moda Bake Shop – strip pieced pleated skirt). I’ve really wanted to try this pattern. I love the one that you made with the long sleeves!

  2. Cheryl says:

Oh, this is perfect! I love the variations – my girls would be dressed in it everyday! Thanks for hosting a great week!

  3. Louisa says:

I love the idea of having the seams on the outside. I’ve only ever done that with baby hats. I’m hoping to make up several pairs of baby pants today.

  4. Sonia says:

The dress you made is so cute! My little girl would love the dress version and my boys would look so cute in the shirts! I’m really hoping (crossing my fingers) to get a dress and leggings, winter hats for all 3 kids, a fleece sweatshirt, footie pajamas, and a couple long-sleeve shirts done this week. However, I haven’t sewn in four years, and the sewing machine I got off of freecycle last week and I have been fighting since last night since the thread keeps jamming in the bobbin section. If I can ever figure this out, the actual sewing process may begin.

  5. Samantha says:

I love the fabric that you used. It is so pretty. Great prize and I have been seeing that pattern everywhere. I have 5 kids so it would get a lot of use!! Question? Do you need to sign up in advance to do the kids week? or can I just put pics in the flickr group? thanks

  6. britt says:

wow. i am comment number 3!! amazing.
i plan on making 2 pullovers, some pjs and some long sleeves to add to some short sleeved ts.

  7. Leslie says:

Ooh, I have been looking at this pattern over and over again. I love sewing with knits (I hate to iron) but I have just recently come to the realization that I NEED a pattern. I made a princess dress for my daughter using an internet tutorial and a self-drafted pattern, and the results were less than stellar (thankfully, no one will be able to see the inside of the dress). I have also made some pants and shirts for the kids that are cute but don’t really fit right – hence the need for the pattern. I’d love to win!

  8. this would be perfect! i have four kids (2 boys and 2 girls) ages 6 weeks to 7 years, and i love that this pattern covers all of those factors! i also love that it doesn’t require a serger to work with knits!

  9. Cate says:

I spent the day sorting fabric and choosing patterns and making lists. We’re heading into spring here so I just finished the market skirt (by Made)for baby 3. I haven’t yet decided what tomorrow will bring…

  10. Raglan! I’ve never done raglan yet. But I sure would like to…

  11. Colette says:

My plans for this week are a dress each for my girls, reusing a very simple pattern I made in the summer. I’ve never made a tee shirt so would love this pattern, though I shouldn’t be here reading this – need to get busy before nap time is over. x

  12. Jo says:

I love that dress and am sure my big girl would love one too (or two :-). Just back from hols today so starting the challenge tomorrow.

  13. Jamie says:

Oooh– would love that pattern. I just got a serger, and am so looking forward to whipping up some knits for my kiddos for fall and winter. But a little intimidated about pattern choice– would love to win one that you’ve liked! Thanks for hosting the KCWC and this giveaway!

  14. worst sewing adventure?
i made 10 card table table cloths for thanksgiving one year. without adding extra fabric for pretty drape. without checking my work after i had done the first.
they were so ugly and tight on the tables!

  15. Antonia says:

This would be the perfect pattern for me as i am a beginning sewer and my little girl LOVES t-shirts and dresses! Keep on going with your great blog!

  16. amber says:

oh goodness, that IS a cute pattern! I have to admit to doing my cutting for four different patterns on Saturday (that was exhausting!) and already did my hour this afternoon, but considering I am *nearly* finished with the tee I started, I have a strong suspicion, that I’ll be finding another hour at some point today if at all possible!

  17. Elizabeth says:

I am so excited for this week. Have my sewing project list and materials ready. Looking forward to dedicating some time to me…and sewing for my kiddies.

  18. Hi, I must admit I am very excited about this. I am planning on mittens and some trousers for my sons. Fingers crossed these will turn out okay, I am really such a novice when it comes to sewing! lou x

  19. Nancy says:

The dress is adorable. I would love to win that pattern.
I hope it’s okay for me to sign up now for kids clothes week challenge. I got started and am having lots of fun.

  20. Susanne says:

I’ve seen that pattern before and it looks so cute! As for my sewing, I did today’s hour after midnight last night, so that counts, right? :-)

  21. Siew says:

I have just the knit fabric for that. Its just scaring me to use it. I know I should just bit the bullet and cut it up I’m afraid I’m going to ruin it because its so cute.

  22. Anne S. says:

I’ve been wanting to try this pattern for a while now! Thanks for the chance to win. :)

Today I am hoping to get some comfy knit outfits made for my very picky almost-3-yr-old.

  23. Sarah AJ says:

That’s adorable — and would work for both of my kids. Nice! Plans for this week are fall clothes for the kiddos, mostly knit tees and dresses.

  24. Linda Meziere says:

I have several granddaughters that would look beautiful in this dress ! Cute pattern.

  25. Natasha says:

My sewing machine is BROKEN! I had some great ideas versatile pieces for Texas winters. A cloak with a removable lining in a black wool some pheasant dresses and aprons and pants to coordinate and mix it up with. Still trying to figure out what is best with the flannels I have for the older girl, I am thinking some tunic dresses. NOW NOTHING :( I wanted to thank you for sparking all of these ideas. I needed it to start working on the fall fashions. I am hoping the sewing machine will be fixed soon so I can “catch up”. I have some birthday outfits to finish soon anyways so it must be fixed soon!
