kcwc: day one
September 20th, 2010
The kids clothes week challenge is here! Gather up your supplies and your ambious list of things to sew and carve out an hour to work on it today. Then hop over to the flickr group and show us what you’re making. Be sure to check back here because as a special treat I have lined up a giveaway for everyday this week! Lots of them have to do with sewing children’s clothes, but some are just cute and I wish I could win, but I’ll let you have all the fun.
I have to confess did my sewing last week so I could have some things done to show you this week. There are some smarty pants out there who did all their cutting out ahead of time, so the flickr group is already starting to fill up with cute handmade clothes. This little number is the dress version of the Tee for Two pattern from Patterns by Figgy. It’s an amazing pattern for a simple raglan sleeve shirt in knit fabric, done on a plain old sewing machine, with all the seams on the outside and the hems left stylishly (and effortlessly) raw.
This means the shirt will be comfortable, itch free and definitely worn. It also means that you have to sew with WRONG sides together, which is very clearly stated in the directions, but it turns out there is some automatic mechanism in my brain that will not let me sew with wrong sides facing because I had to unpick the same seam three times before I got it right. It’s not like I was tired and not paying attention either: I had coffee in my system, it was mid-morning, quiet even, but my brain kept flipping the fabric behind my back.
If you think you can sew the seams on the outside without your brain short circuting, then you should leave a comment to win this very pattern. That’s right Shelley from Patterns by Figgy has generously donated the Tee for Two pattern for the first giveaway. The shirt can be long sleeved or short sleeved, or even a dress with a little gathering at the front and flutter sleeves–super customizable and for boys and girls sizes 12mo.-6/7. So leave a comment with some ridicuous sewing desaster you’ve had, or your grand plans for the week, or the weather report, or just say hi. I will use the random number picker thing tomorrow and post an update on this post with the winner.

THE GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED!
The winner is #62, Rebecca from The Prepared Family. Congratulations Rebecca!
I used random.org and if I knew how to show you the little picture of the number picker I would, but I promise it said 62.

I just made a raglan tee this weekend for my sons first birthday. After fighting with the collar and then googling how you’re actually supposed to do it, it eventually turned out pretty cute, if I do say so myself. And I do.
LOVE this pattern! And HATE undoing the same seam multiple times — been there, done that, managed to finish the project anyway.
I love this pattern. I’ve been holding out to buy it with a few others. Winning it would be awesome. I am making a brown cord jacket for my older fella. Hopefully it will get finished this week.
Oh, very cute pattern! I love that it works for boy clothes as well. It always seems that I can find a million things to sew for my daughter, but cute stuff for my son is harder to come by.
Neat looking pattern! I think I could probably wrap my head around the exterior seams, although out of habit I would probably do it wrong. I am trying to convert some short sleeved shirts to long sleeved this week, simple enough, right? But I have had many sewing disasters where I sew the sleeve on inside-out…usually when I am trying to finish quickly because someone is waking up… not a great time to be sewing!
I had a sewing disaster with a dress I was making for me to wear to my BIL’s wedding. It started with trim not lining up, the dress being too big, looking bad when I made it smaller, making me look fat all the way through. . . and ended with me cutting the dress up to use the fabric for a new bag and buying a new skirt for the wedding.
I’m so excited about this KCWC! I had a sewing disaster last night when trying to sew a lining into pants. I really couldn’t get my head around how to do this, so when I turned them right side out through my too tiny hole, they would have been impossible to wear. Thanks to my seam ripper and some persistence, they look great now.
OK…I’ve just blogged about my sewing goals for today…hopefully this challenge will keep me honest for this week! Thanks for the chance for this pattern…I’ve been wanting to get more comfortable sewing with knits.
Cheers!
It is so hard to think of fall clothes today as it is 97 outside and going to be the same all week.
Hoping to feel the fall soon so my daughter can wear some of these clothes soon.
Well we had hail last night and scattered showers today. Would love to sew today unfortanatly somebody has to restock the food supply and that is me. I am dying for some Patterns by Figgy, so very very cute.
My plan this week is to make some cute skirts for my 3 girls out of an apple knit print from my latest Chez Ami fabric buy. Apples say autumn to me for sure! As far as disasters, I have too many to share them all, but my most memorable is sewing a bathing suit with my serger using all wolly nylon & having the seams burst while swimming. Not a good thing to happen!!!
Great pattern. I’ve been wanting to make some shirts for my boys, and this one looks like a winner.
What a great pattern.
My plans: Finish a skirt. Put together a shirt that’s already cut out and start Halloween costumes.
I LOVE the dress version of the pattern! I’m planning to sew knits for the very first time. A dress version of the Oliver+S Hopscotch top in a giraffe print I bought from Reprodepot on sale about six years ago and a matching pair of pants (to carry the outfit through winter) from the Oliver+S Nature Pants pattern in a deep purple. Fingers are crossed.
I have three little ones (Girl 8, Boy 5 and baby girl 4 months). I have no problem whipping out cute things for the girls, but find that I hardly ever sewing anything for my little guy. I’d love to get this pattern so I could make him a special shirt…maybe a mama made version of one of the tops he’s been eyeing form the latest miniBoden catalog.
Thank you!!!
I would love to have this pattern. I was just last night trying to figure out how to make a raglan sleeve pattern, and it was not a pretty sight.

Oh my gosh, I was crushing on this pattern just yesterday over at Bolt! Perfect for both my active 4yo boy and fashion-conscious 7yo daughter. Want!
just found your blog, I am so excited! I love sewing kids clothes, and thus super excited for this week!
I just started sewing with knits. Seams on the outside? I’m such a perfectionist that I would welcome the challenge of this pattern!
