kcwc: day one

September 20th, 2010

The kids clothes week challenge is here! Gather up your supplies and your ambious list of things to sew and carve out an hour to work on it today. Then hop over to the flickr group and show us what you’re making. Be sure to check back here because as a special treat I have lined up a giveaway for everyday this week! Lots of them have to do with sewing children’s clothes, but some are just cute and I wish I could win, but I’ll let you have all the fun.

I have to confess did my sewing last week so I could have some things done to show you this week. There are some smarty pants out there who did all their cutting out ahead of time, so the flickr group is already starting to fill up with cute handmade clothes. This little number is the dress version of the Tee for Two pattern from Patterns by Figgy. It’s an amazing pattern for a simple raglan sleeve shirt in knit fabric, done on a plain old sewing machine, with all the seams on the outside and the hems left stylishly (and effortlessly) raw.

This means the shirt will be comfortable, itch free and definitely worn. It also means that you have to sew with WRONG sides together, which is very clearly stated in the directions, but it turns out there is some automatic mechanism in my brain that will not let me sew with wrong sides facing because I had to unpick the same seam three times before I got it right. It’s not like I was tired and not paying attention either: I had coffee in my system, it was mid-morning, quiet even, but my brain kept flipping the fabric behind my back.

If you think you can sew the seams on the outside without your brain short circuting, then you should leave a comment to win this very pattern. That’s right Shelley from Patterns by Figgy has generously donated the Tee for Two pattern for the first giveaway.  The shirt can be long sleeved or short sleeved, or even a dress with a little gathering at the front and flutter sleeves–super customizable and for boys and girls sizes 12mo.-6/7. So leave a comment with some ridicuous sewing desaster you’ve had, or your grand plans for the week, or the weather report, or just say hi. I will use the random number picker thing tomorrow and post an update on this post with the winner.

THE GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED!

The winner is #62, Rebecca from The Prepared Family. Congratulations Rebecca!

I used random.org and if I knew how to show you the little picture of the number picker I would, but I promise it said 62.

Never sewed with knit, but I’d love to try. Both the tee and dress are so sweet.

  2. Thomas says:

Been sewing all day… A dress that I cut out last night, a bit of applique on a funky 1970s Healthtex shirt, and a lambswool and flannel scarf. Now what to do next???

  3. jennie lynn says:

I would be tickled pink to win.
    thanks!

  5. mira says:

can always use another great pattern, seen this one recommended several places =)

  6. Rebecca says:

I told my sister in law that you cannot become an accomplished sewer if you have not picked out a million little stiches. I am no where near a million, so I feel your pain. Thanks!

  7. Kim says:

This would be the perfect intro to sewing knits! I am so excited for this week – love the idea! I hope I can keep up. I can’t remember how I was introduced to your blog (linked from somewhere!) but you’re in my reader an I love it! Thanks :)

  8. micalah says:

i haven’t started sewing for my kiddos yet, but i did finish 2 flowergirl dresses for a friend this morning. :) thanks for this awesome challenge and giveaway!

  9. Shelley just facebooked about this so I had to rush over! I love her stuff!! Thanks for doing this. I’m going to get some exercise in and then its to the sewing room!!

  10. Dawn says:

Sewing disaster? Pretty much anything I’ve tried to sew with my serger. I know that people love their sergers, but I’m fairly certain mine is possessed! (demonic sewing machine seems a much more reasonable explanation than simple user error, no?) ;-)

  11. Kris says:

ooh the seam ripper is my friend, lol! what a great inspiration source for sewing for my girl. i’ll have to post soon!! and the pattern would be great, i tend to work without patterns, so it’d be nice to try this for a change!

  12. Andrea says:

Cute pattern! I’ve never seen it before!

  13. Kylie says:

Awesome! I would definitely use that. I don’t have any kids or I would be participating, but I have decided to make a couple of overdue baby gifts this week!

  14. Heather M says:

I wouldn’t say this sewing disaster is ridiculous but definitely annoying: I went to start sewing a fall coat for my 3 year old today, looked at the pattern, noticed that it didn’t include seam allowances, told myself to remember to add seam allowances when cutting it out, and then proceeded to cut the whole thing out withOUT seam allowances. So, I’ll be sewing it together with itty bitty seam allowances and hoping it still fits her.

  15. Millie says:

I am hoping to make some trousers for my son and twin girls. Probably from Ottobre.

  16. vicki says:

Cute! I am excited for a week of kids’ projects, even though I have about 4 quilting WIPs that really need to be finished, too!

  17. emily says:

Ooh, that pattern is exactly what I am looking for!

One time I spent hours working on a very special dress and ruined it on the very last step, by being a bit overzealous opening a buttonhole. Ripped right through! I can’t be the only one to have done this?? I cried actual tears over that one. :)

  18. kendra says:

does it count if i *always* sew things backwards, one wrong side facing, or in differing sleeve/leg lengths?

  19. Paige says:

    super cute!
Recently I was making some pants for my baby boy and I sewed the legs together wrong so that one leg aimed down like it should, and the other stuck straight out. I called them picaso pants (for 5 minutes, and then seam ripped them and sewed them correctly).

  20. Valerie says:

I don’t sew much with knits, but I would love to try! The worst disaster I’ve had so far was a skirt I made for myself. I ended up cutting it up and making a bag!

  21. Sarah says:

    Lovely pattern!
I’m aiming on a hat for my tiny baby (12weeks) and a skirt for my bigger baby (4 and a half years).
This is ambitious for me. I am *not* good at sewing

  22. erica says:

I adore this simple, classic look. ive been so busy in other things this is just what I need to get back on my sewing track. thx for the post. will deffinatly head over to the flicker for more inspiration!

  23. Pumpkinbear says:

Ah, dear–had the girlies pick out the flannel from my stash for their new nightgowns, then my older girly decided to do a little doll dress project and cut herself a snip off of the horses flannel fabric set aside for her nightgown. I do allow little snips, but I must take her aside and make perfectly clear that the little snips must come from the edges of the fabric, not from the middle fold!

Must also now find another fabric for her nightgown.

  24. Holly says:

ooh baby! I’d love to win that pattern. I’m working up some of Rae’s big butt baby pants this week (I hope!).

  25. suzanne says:

Fabric and patterns are waiting patiently for me to return home and rev up my sewing machine. What a great style for boys and girls…fingers crossed!
