kcwc: day three
September 22nd, 2010
Sorry, little behind schedule today because I went out with my wonderful husband to celebrate our anniversary last night, but I’m up an caffeinated now, and the winners of the big butt baby pants and the toddler back pack patterns have been announced!
Sometimes you don’t need anything fancy you just need a plain old pair of pants. These are made with some nice, heavy wide wale corduroy and I used the same pattern as these shorts I made, only longer. Of course they are too long and too big all over really, but the boy grows like a weed, so they might fit at the end of the winter. Still, he loves them (hence all the wrinkles) and now says gray is his favorite color–wonder who he got that from?
For today’s giveaway Liesl from Oliver + S has kindly offered their new Music Box Jumper pattern! I think everyone who sews children’s clothes is crazy for Oliver + S patterns. And how could you not be? They are beautifully designed, well written, and come with their own paper doll! The purl bee recently showed off a version of the Music Box Jumper in corduroy (liberty corduroy!) and it couldn’t be more perfect.
To enter the giveaway today, I’d love it if you tell us something about an Oliver + S project you’ve worked on or a story you have about working with patterns or even what has caught your eye in the flickr group so far. Good Luck!

These two items caught my flickr eye. Lovely! It is very inspiring to see all the unique ways to use fabrics or reuse fabrics.
I would love that pattern. I have 3 girls so it would definitely come in handy. My favorite on flicker so far has been the jacket by supergail. http://www.flickr.com/photos/12387001@N00/5004445557/in/pool-1293871@N23/
So beautiful!
I have to laugh, because I just participated in Sew Mama Sew’s Oliver + s Jump Rope Dress Sew Along earlier this month. I love the Pupper Show dress, just bought the School Photo Dress as soon as I could preorder (not sewing it this week though. I have to order the fabric I want.) I’m sewing several O+s patterns this week!
I haven’t tried their patterns, but they look phenomenal. I am always dreaming about which pattern I would try.
I am in love and a little obsessed with Oliver + s patterns. I have a couple of patterns and I sometimes stay up at night dreaming up endless posibilities for cute clothes. I just finished the School Days coat http://www.flickr.com/photos/54104767@N05/5009439464/in/pool-oliverands and i’m so proud of how well constricted it looks. I would love another pattern for my collection!
Your corduroys look great! I don’t have any Oliver + S patterns. I’ve had my eye on them for sometime now. I think I would like to try making the coat. In the Flickr group so far my favs are Lemon Cadets & Supergail’s jackets!!! WoW amazing work :)
I love O&S patterns (esp. the ice cream social dress), but I have not yet tried one out (I’m super new to sewing). I would be so happy to get the chance to do so! Here’s one of my favs from the Flickr pool: http://www.flickr.com/photos/iheartmonami/5013296662/in/pool-1293871@N23.
I’m working on O+S Sandbox pants now, and they look a lot like those. But I like your back pocket design better. Might have to find that Japanese book!
I have a few Oliver + S patterns but so far I have only made the Ice Cream Dress/Blouse. I love it so much that I have made 3 tops, a dress and I have 2 more cut and ready to go. I really want to try the other patterns but the Ice Cream Dress is so darn cute I can’t stop myself.
My goal this week is to make a 2 + 2 Blouse. I have the material picked out and ready.
There is definitely room for more grey in everyone’s life!
I love Oliver + S patterns. I have used 3 so far and have more in my collection to use. My tip for their patterns is to trace the pattern pieces instead of cutting them out. This way you can keep the different sizes in tact and make a new version for each time your little one grows! These patterns are really well written and have great details that really make each garment a classic.
I’ve never worked with the O&S patterns before, but they look lovely and I have heard alot of good about them from young Mom’s who sew.
I have not yet worked with an Oliver & S pattern, but I did just help my mom pick out fabric for one that she is sewing for my daughter. We chose some beautiful Far Far Away prints. And speaking of Heather Ross, the first dress I made for my daughter was the Flower Girl Dress from Weekend Sewing. I chose to modify the bodice, based on other sewists’ projects, and I figured it out All By Myself.
I recently bought the bubble dress pattern and am excited to try and make it. I’m a little nervous though, since I am very new to making clothes (my daughter is only 7 months old). I think I am going to make the 18 month size so I’ll be able to finish it on time.
I love all of the Oliver + S patterns! I tend to make mostly the boy patterns but just picked up the new school photo dress and can’t wait to make one as a gift!
I did the jump rope sew along which was so great. Love the instructions in the patterns.
The flickr group is all so cute I could never even begin to pick a favorite!
Lately Grey’s been a favourite of mine, too.
I haven’t tried an Oliver + S pattern. Actually I haven’t tried many patterns. I have a tendency to just make things up as I go along. I do want to try out more patterns this year, as I think that I would learn more that way. When I was a beginner I did make a winter coat from a pattern – but I ended up altering even that. Oh, and I did make a dress using a Japanese book pattern. I liked just following the pictures.
I love the Oliver + S patterns, but I don’t own any so far!
I love this little jumper in the flickr pool:

Last year, my 4 boys got Oliver & S Jammies for St. Nicholas. http://chazandginger.blogspot.com/2009/12/christmas-day.html
My two littlest sported the tea party playsuit on Easter http://chazandginger.blogspot.com/2010/04/eggs-seersucker.html
For KCW, I’m working on another playsuit with some autumnal variations for the baby.
I’ve never used an oliver+s pattern, but I’d love to. :) I am really enjoying the flickr pool, there are so many wonderful garments being made.
Oh, oh oh! I would LOVE to win this pattern. I have most of their patterns and absolutely love them. They’re complex but I’ve learned more about sewing clothes using these patterns than any other!
I love your corduroy pants! So perfect for fall and winter – I may have to go corduroy shopping!
Your cord pants are great. Corduroy is a staple around here, because it looks nice and is heavy-duty…definitely a plus with boys.
I’ve never used an O+S pattern…I didn’t realize they had girl patterns that went up to a size 12! Will have to give this one a try for sure. I thought their patterns ended at size 8.
I am working on another Puppet Show tunic for my daughter this week — I have it all cut out and have only made it past sewing the darts (last night was a loong one with the kiddos for some reason!). I made one last year about this time, and have some pretty floral/calico-ey fabrics from my stash (I think originally from my mom’s stash) that I’m using. Of course I cut out the fabric upside down (whoops!) but decided it is a) hardly noticeable b) looks cool. I have learned so much sewing from Liesl’s patterns. Like for one, ironing REALLy makes things easier in certain situations :p These patterns are a wonderful investment to any sewing library!
made the story time pjs for my two year old daughter, and my boys (4 and 7) demanded some for themselves. My kids love ’em.
I love gray corduroy. It just epitomizes fall! I’ve sewn the O+S Tea Party Sundress for my daughter and also the Ruffled Halter freebie pattern from Stitch Magazine. I love her patterns too! Thanks so much for doing the giveaway.
