kcwc: day two
September 21st, 2010
I got these two pairs of PINK! and YELLOW! cords at the gap this summer for 3 bucks each and knew right away I wanted to turn them into pants for my kids. Last year I made pants for them out of my husband’s old jeans (sort of like this) but the rise was too low and they never wore them–my son called them, without any malice, his “falling down pants.”
I wanted to get the fit right this time, but the stinkers were sleeping when I made these so I got all fancy with the pockets while I waited. There are two patch pockets on the back of each pair and a little pocket in front–a star for my son and a heart for my daughter. When they tried them on they both complained that the pocket was too small. Wouldn’t you be excited to have a star pocket on your pants? Whatever. They fit.
I used a pretty bit of printed corduroy for the elastic casing on the pink ones and this crazy awesome vintage scrap I had for the yellow pair. This is a super easy way to make use of those jeans you never wear, but can’t get rid of for some weird reason. Cute recycling. My friend Mary Jo over at Five Green Acres put a little upcycling twist to kids clothes week; check it out if you are making big clothes into small clothes this week.
Made by Rae Giveaway!
Today’s giveaway is from the fabulous Rae from Made by Rae. She is hilarious and down to earth and a damn fine seamstress. She kindly offered up two patterns for kids clothes week: the big butt baby pants and the toddler backpack. Both patterns are PDFs, so you could even add them to your list for this week (ha!). Just tell me which one you would rather have in the comments and I’ll choose two winners! The toddler backpack is full of nice details: pockets and piping and padded straps and little loops for hanging. And the big butt baby pants, while also being extremely fun to say, are versatile and useful and super cute. Decisions, decisions.

The winners are
big butt baby pants: #10 Shannon

I love upcycling, and what you’d done is awesome
I have a jeans waiting, and I still didn’t know what to do with it :D
About the giveaway, are they from Rae? I really love her creations, they are all very pretty
Love those pants!
The pockets are incredible! And that bit of vintage cord is quite rad. I’ve already sewn two pairs of BBB pants this week, so I’d love to have a copy of the little backpack.
Hi thanks for the giveaway! love the big butt baby pants – since we are cloth diapering and nothing fits;) this would be great to win. cheers tanya_cruick@hotmail.com
I love the cord trousers for your kids! fantastic. I’d love a chance to win the big baby butt pants. I’ve been planning to buy them, but have been a bit skint (broke in american, I believe)since she releasedv it. My baby got a rather big bum, and we use cloth nappies on him too.
Adorable! Love the cords! I’d also love to win the big butt baby pants pattern! My little girl goes through pants like crazy (she is quite the adventurer!) and so I need to start making her some pants to keep up! :) Thanks for the giveaway!
Hmm, it’s hard to choose but the backpack is so cute!
Well I’ll go for the backpack then!
I LOVE the big butts pattern! I’ve been in such need of a pattern like that for so long!
Thanks for such a fabulous blog and a great giveaway! :o)
Love the pants. That was my evening project for tonight. A different pattern, but same idea. So next I want to try this pattern. And I love the back pack pattern. And the fabric pattern that she used for them!
Love your up-cycled gap pants! I’ve been up-cycling some` old cashmere jumpers into pant for my baby to keep her snug this winter :)
I’d love the pattern for the BBB pants – a pattern that will fit a cloth diapered bum is brilliant!
Hi there – I would love the Big Butt Baby Pants! Having recently switched to cloth nappies, for babies no. 2 & 3, it is so difficult to find pants that fit – maybe it is just here in Australia, but clothes seem to be “slim fit”. Not many people use cloth here so I am trying to make a difference – the pants pattern would be a huge bonus, they would definately be the coolest kids around! Thankyou.
[…] sewing Arug! I’ve been without Internet for the past few days. Not the best timing with the KCWC going on! I’m feeling a bit behind (heh), but have been sewing up a storm. Sew (double heh!) […]

I LOVE the big-butt baby pants & wish they were around a few years ago when my little ones waddled their little “big” butts around, but now they are in school and the backpack would be a perfect project to do for them…and so personal, I LOVE it also.
