morocco
November 3rd, 2008
So we went to Morocco. It was our honeymoon–five years late, but our honeymoon nonetheless and now that we have two little kids I think the time to ourselves was much more appreciated. And thanks to my wonderful in-laws we were able to get away for a whole week. We spent a few days in Marrakesh in a very simple riad, which was nice because Marrakesh is a crazy, frantic place.
We were dodging mopeds and surviving the hard sell, but also eating some damn fine food and drinking mint tea all over the place.
We took a bus to the coast to a town called Essaouria, where we had the best meal of all. Right on the ocean in a little shack, we pointed to fish we wanted and they slapped it on the grill. I really have no business eating seafood in a land locked state, I now realize. I ate piles of shrimp and sardines and washed them all down with a fanta (why can’t I get an orange fanta in the US? what the hell? and why is it so good?).
We had an amazing time and there is too much to show here (but there are a few more pictures on flickr). It made me realize I need a lot more color in my life and I need to get to the ocean more often.
One more picture, because who else is going to get excited about huge piles of yarn straight out of the dye vat?
Beautiful pictures!– I’m so glad you had a great time… No worries about SMS– I’ll email later today. All is good. Congrats on a wonderful honeymoon!
Looks incredible – happy honeymoon!
Oh, how lovely! The last picture made me squeal out loud. YARN!
how wonderful! it sounds like a great honeymoon. :)
Morocco is an amazing country–and you are right–you do spend some time avoiding the “hard sell” which is part of the fun. Fresh orange juice from carts in the market in Marrakesh was my favorite! My husband and I will also take a 5 year (or so) late honeymoon too. One of these days….
Oh, it looks like a wonderful place. It’s on the top of my list of places to visit. I certainly appreciate all the patterns and colors going on in your photos. Happy Anniversary!
Wow, what a great time! Lucky you. I love the pic of the yarn. :)
What a fabulous trip that must have been!
Orange Fanta recently became available in the US again, but it might taste different since it uses corn syrup as the sweetener and contains no juice (some varieties in other countries contain up to 10% juice)
So jealous! I love all the colours. Maybe one day …..
We all need more colour. I adore “real” travel pics – and yes, that yarn. I’m excited.
It’s so nice to be back! home and in the craftblog-o-sphere. I missed you all! really!
oh and thanks donna! we mess up a lot of perfectly good things, don’t we.
I am! And I adore the interlocking circles motif on those tiles. Happy honeymoon and happy homecoming!
sweet… the colors are beautiful! When you’ve got two kids, you take those occasions as they come…. it took us until our 16th anniversary to do a wonderful trip! As long as you’re celebrating it, that’s what’s important! ;) It sounds totally wonderful! BTW… I love how clean and simple your blog is.
I’m so jealous, I’ve always wanted to go to Morocco, the colours look amazing!
Really can’t find ornage fanta in the US?? lol… My kids would get crazy then, lol…
The floor tiles you took the pic to are called “hydraulic tiles” at least here in SPain and they’re amazing! That one was a bit bad treated but there are really beauties of those!
What a wonderful honeymoon… long time coming! thanks for the gorgeous photos… color is good, great reminder! Welcome home to your own and your blog :)
wow! there is such great color there. i am totally jealous!!! did you bring any goodies home?
It looks fabulous! I am glad that you had a great time! I really must visit Marrakesh some day! And I agree, I would be very excited by those piles of yarn!!
How fabulous. Beautiful photos. One day, one day,I hope to go. And welcome back.
Gorgeous colors! Mu husband works in Algeria and I sent him a list of things to bring back home;-) Love the tulip chairs too!!!
What a wonderful photo that top one is. So much colour. Lucky you – I’ve always been intrigued by Morocco.
Wow, this looks fabulous…
Do you mind me asking the name of the riad where you stayed? My husband and I were just talking about spending a mini-break in Marrakesh and sleeping in a nice riad, so this is a coincidence! :)
We are Portuguese and Morocco is so near… we feel we must go there at least once!
Thanks so much!
concha, it’s called the riad W. It is impossible to find, so either have the owener pick you up or pay someone to lead you there. We had dinner there one night and it was definitly worth it. We found it in the Time Out morocco and if I find the book I can give you the address or you could look around the internet for it. There is also this crazy fanastic place to stay in Essaouria (we didn’t stay there, but I really wanted to) you can see it here:

Have a great time!
Marrakech is my husband’s hometown, and Essaouria is my 2nd favorite place on the planet. The first being the market area of Marrakech. I am hoping to get back there soon!!!!
