peeps

April 8th, 2009

I suppose there are people out there who don’t care for peeps, but I’ve never met them. Most people I know eat them this time of year with abandon and many have their own special way of enjoying them: I like mine stale, for instance (just like my mom), and I had an old boyfriend who liked to burn the little bunnies with his lighter before he ate them–so tough.  But this year instead of buying my peeps, I thought I’d make them. They’re just marshmallows sprinkled with sugar, how hard could it be?  Not hard really, after you royally screw up a couple of batches and have to throw them out, run out of colored sugar (by the second chick), have a small sugar induced meltdown, suck it up and make your own colored sugar (just throw some white sugar and a couple drops of food coloring in a food processor–nothing to freak out about), and come to terms with the fact that every other bunny you make will be a mutant, so no, not hard at all. The most important thing is not to over whip the marshmallows. They should have very soft peaks and can even still be a little warm. I used martha’s marshmallows for piping recipe, which is strangely lacking in the flavor department, so add vanilla extract (or peppermint or licorice or pineapple or whatever your little heart desires), but other than that it was great–and she has piping directions here. Oh and they are freakin delicious, fresh or stale.

I keep forgeting to say thank you for all the congratulations and kind words from all of you about my pregnancy. Thank you so much! It is so wonderful to hear and much needed as I’m freaking out a bit about having three kids under three. Better go eat some more peeps.

Let me introduce myself: Hi, I’m Jenny, and I don’t like peeps!

There! Now you’ve met somebody that doesn’t like them. I like marshmallows but peeps with all that sugar just make my teeth hurt! blegh.

Congrats on the pregnancy.. you’ll be fine. I have 4 kids under the age of 6. I won’t lie, it’s tough sometimes, but I wouldn’t change it for anything, they are a joy! :o)

  2. I’m afraid I am also one of the grumpy souls who does not like peeps. But your post was fabulous–you know all comedy comes from tragedy, right?–and few things are more tragic (at the time) than failed cooking experiments with mutant bunnies. The photo you shared shows a lovely bunny, however. So lovely I would eat it were it in front of me. Sorry this is a wacky comment. I really enjoy your blog.

My mom too liked them stale and to this day, that’s the only way I’ll eat them. I buy a package, take off the wrapping and set them in my cupboard for a few days. Thanks for introducing me to the recipe.

  4. Super cute. Nice work!

I have never eaten a peep, but I really do think I’d love them – what’s not to love about slightly crispy marshmallow?

    And a huge congratulations!!!

I have three kids five and under and when I had my third my oldest was barely three. It’s crazy and chaotic but worth every moment. They love each other immensely and play together great. I wouldn’t do it any other way. :)
The peeps look amazing and much better than the store bought ones!

I’ve only eaten a peep once, never liked it. I’m not a huge sweet fan though. but, I love to look at them, they are super cute lol

I love peeps. In fact you could say I have a peep problem. Yours are so cute. Good idea. Love the pink sugar.

  9. Now your peep looks sweet – I’d think I’d try that one.

I do like marshmallows, but I’ve never felt tempted to try peeps since moving here. I think it’s the colour that puts me off. Plus, they’re available at the same time of year as Cadbury’s Creme Eggs, so I’m usually already feeling a little queasy after eating too much sweet stuff…

    Mmmm, those look so good!

ooooh… my entire ‘being’ thrills at the thought of the sugary soft goodness of peeps. We moved to a small town this past fall, and I’ve searched and sought, in despiration to find peeps, alas I’m deprived of them. I should consider trying to make my own, peep goodness all year ’round.. sounds too good to be true.

Congratulations on the pregnancy! I had three under three and a quarter and yes is was definitely exhausting at times but oh am I happy we did it now. My youngest will turn six this summer and my oldest nine next month. They definitely have a love hate relationship at times but when my oldest came home and said how sad he felt for a friend that didn’t have any siblings and how he loves having his sisters to play with I knew we had made the right decision.

Just remember to breath occassionally and step off the bus once in a while to enjoy the little things and if the laundry, cleaning doesn’t get done because you are sitting feeding the little one – so what! such a magic moment that is gone in a heartbeat. Best of luck and I hope the yucky pregnancy side effects ease off.

Meg, my oldest was still three when my youngest was born. Three kids is pretty tricky, but going from one kid to two kids was the trickiest. So maybe your hardest time is already over and you don’t have to worry too much. We’re never given more than we can handle :)

how cool! I’ll have to give these a try next year!
