polka dot fairy tale dress
April 30th, 2013
I totally left you hanging! Sorry! Well, the dress is done and it turned out even better than I had hoped.
I don’t think I could say any more about this dress–I mean I’ve written 6 posts about it already!
The seventh hour (in case you are wondering) was spend hand sewing the lining to the zipper and sewing a little hook and eye in the back. Oh and sewing a veil, which was very poofy and weird, but veils are poofy and weird by nature, so I think that means I got it right?
Her first communion went well. She didn’t slip and fall in her high heel (!) shoes. And multiple people said the dress fit her personality to a tee. A fantastic compliment if I ever heard one. And she loved the dress! She may not ever wear it again, but maybe her daughter will someday.

beautiful!!!! I love how you broke down all the time spent sewing the dress. I think it’s a really great thing. We should all do that with a sewing project just to document all the time and effort that goes into what we’re making!
because sometimes it is an enormous amount of effort!
This dress is just beautiful, and so is your daughter. I cannot think of a better use of time than sewing such a perfect dress for such an important occasion.
It’s beautiful, Meg! And blessings to your daughter on her First Communion.
oh thank you, erin.
Truly very beautiful!
Amazingly cute.
The dress and the little one =)
Beautiful! I remember my first communion and hadn’t a beautiful dress like this. Congratulations to your daughter. Thank you for share withs us her dress.
Fabulous dress. And she has the most beautiful hair.
its so sweet Meg! What a wonderful reason to spend seven hours on the perfect dress.
Spectacular! My daughter got heels for the first time last week, she’s 9, and was so thrilled.
I bet your lady was over the moon with a new dress and heels!
Such a darling, darling dress – the polka dots!! It’s wonderfully constructed and I loved how you broke it down each day. Awesome!
The dress is so adorable! I especially love the big bow in the back! So cute. It was great to be a part of KCW! It really inspired me to get sewing for my kids again because I’ve been focusing a lot on crochet the last few months. I’m so glad I took part because I’ve got the sewing itch back. :-)
I’ve really enjoyed these posts although I’m pretty sure this dress would take me a lot longer than 7 hours. It looks absolutely amazing.
All your laboring paid off- the dress is lovely and perfect for the occasion:)
Gorgeous! And I love how those freckles look in the 1 st picture with the dots in the background!
It’s stunning! A true labor of love:)
love the dress – and i love your daughter’s beautiful hair…..
Beautiful dress, beautiful bow, beautiful photos and your daughter has beautiful hair and the fit is so perfect on her. Awesome job as that would have taken me more than 7 hours to do, whew!
It’s gorgeous!!!! It came out great!
It’s perfect!! I have to say I really enjoyed reading your blog posts everyday and how you walked us through your 7 hours of sewing. I love that you spent it making one totally awesome dress!!
Beautiful. Congratulations, a job well done.
meg! i am late to the party, as usual. i saw your first post, then got so immersed in my sewing, i just finally caught up! so you too have been to liesl bootcamp…you too have experienced the insane detail, and the beauty and craftsmanship that spurs you to invest even *more* time than suggested in living up to the standard she sets (you find yourself handstitching more than she asks, right?). but, look at the amazing dress!!! bravo! so beautiful!
Its beautiful!
Congratulations to your daughter on her First Communion,my second youngest is preparing for hers.
The dress is beautiful and so well made. It took me the full seven hours to produce a tunic (and that didn’t have the lining) so I can completely appreciate the effort put in. She looks beautiful. I’m sure she had a memorable day and your dress will be wrapped up in that special memory. Thanks for hosting KCW. It inspired me to sew even more.
Wow – it turned out wonderfully! It’s great seeing different versions of the same dress. Thanks for sharing all your steps along the way. x
It’s absolutely beautiful! Perfect for a first communion. Congratulations!
