rayon raglan
May 2nd, 2014
There are a bunch of sewing-for-yourself sew-alongs going on at the moment. It’s hard not to get swept up in all the bloggy excitement.
There is the Spring Top Sew-along by Rae, Selfish Sewing Week by Rachel, and the big daddy Me Made May challenge by Zoe. There are actually so many sew-alongs and challenges and sewing events, I’ve been working on starting a newsletter for them all. I’m calling it sew-along CENTRAL. It will be a simple newsletter to let you know about all the up coming sewing related events. What do you think?
I will do a proper post next week when everything is up and running, but if you’d like to follow along on Facebook please do! And if you are hosting a sew-along or sewing challenge this summer and would like to be included in the newsletter, drop me a line at sewalongcentral@gmail.com.
Okay, back to the actual sewing. I have been meaning to make a shirt out of this beautiful rayon print for a long time. I knew I wanted to make a loose-fitting raglan with knit sleeves. I had originally intended to use a charcoal colored knit for the sleeves, but it contrasted too much with the print. So I went with this light gray striped jersey and used the wrong side of the rayon (you can see the brighter, right side peeking out in the photo above).
I haven’t hemmed it yet because I’m not sure whether I like it or not. I like how the print and the stripes work together, but I don’t know if I like how they work together on me. And the neckline is a bit droopy–a wash might fix that though. On the upside, I did draft the pattern myself and it is pretty decent, which is saying a lot! Next time I might add some darts and fiddle with the high-low-ness of the hem. The rayon was not awful to work with, but then again I haven’t hemmed it, so I probably shouldn’t talk.
One thing sewn for me! And another actually cut out. I do enjoy sewing for my hip-less wonders more, but it’s fun to try my hand at some grown up sewing too. Have you sewn anything for yourself lately?
The rayon print is beautiful! It works great with the relaxed fit and the gray stripe. Love it.
Haha hipless wonders. Me too.
Love the prints! I just sewed a raglan T and blogged it yesterday. I, too, am overwhelmed by the sewing-for-me memes but it is really fun to see what people are making. Great idea for the newsletter!
What pattern did you use? Or did you make your own? I really like your top, and I like the way the fabrics go together.
I think it’s super cute and fun and unique. Just what I want if its handmade!
Cute! I love raglan sleeves. I’ve been rounding up sew alongs and competitions for the past few months, once you get them all in one place you realize how many there are! If you’re looking for things to add for May, I have a bunch listed: http://swoodsonsays.com/sew-a-long-calendar/
Awesome, Stephanie! Thanks for the link!!
Love it, and it looks great on you too.
Lovely pastels in your new raglan and it looks light and breezy too, perfect for warm weather wear.
Great idea, I used to have a tab on my blog for these with the same purpose. I think it will be wanted by many:)
nice shirt. love the color combinations. i’m sewing a shirt for myself-my first time ever. i’ve made some mistakes and need to figure out how to fix them. but most importantly, i’m having so much fun doing it.
I like your mix of prints and the idea too. You can add Project Sewn to your list too. Starts Monday and goes 4 weeks.
I rarely ever comment here (sorry!), though I’ve been a faithful reader for a long time. But I just HAD to comment on this top. Love it. I think the fabric combo is stylish, yet unique. I say go for it!
I can’t believe you resisted the temptation to point out your perfect pattern matched pocket! Bravo!!
it’s a great top, love the fabrics.
And I’d sign up to a sew-along list. I always seem to find out about them a bit too late.
Sending you an email about my Little Things To Sew Cover to Cover Challenge

aw, thanks for noticing! I’ll do a proper post when the newsletter is up and running. And of course I’ll add your epic sew-along!
love this!
Where did you get the fabrics? They are so pretty.
They are both from Joann’s Fabric!
rock star pocket pattern matching!
aw *sniff sniff* you noticed!
I love this top! I also love your sewing round-up idea. I considered something similar once but got overwhelmed…it’s so much to keep up with! So, I’m thrilled you are taking the job. :)
